Influential French film director Agnès Varda, known for helming such films as Cleo From 5 to 7, Vagabond, and Faces Places, has died of complications from breast cancer at the age of 90, Variety reports. In 2017, she became the first female director to be awarded an honorary Oscar, and last year became the oldest nominee for a competitive Oscar. “The filmmaker and artist Agnès Varda died from a cancer at her home... surrounded by her family and friends,” a family statement reads. They described the late director as a “joyful feminist” and “passionate artist.” She worked until her death, presenting her last film, called Varda by Agnes, last month at the Berlin Film Festival, where she received the Berlinale Camera honorary award.
