Rumors ran rampant leading up to Amazon’s press event Thursday, with techies clamoring to know what new products would be unveiled. First among them: The new Amazon Paperwhite ($179), which is “thinner than a magazine, lighter than a paper,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Its screen is larger than the previous Kindle and employs a new backlighting technology. Bezos also unveiled the new Kindle Fire HD, which has better Wi-Fi, dual stereo speakers, a larger display, and a front-facing camera with Skype integration—all features that make the device more competitive with Apple’s iPad.
