A longtime family friend said the late Koppel had struggled with both drugs and alcohol for years. Koppel reportedly spent 12 hours drinking Sunday in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood before ending up in a stranger’s apartment in Washington Heights, a gritty uptown neighborhood. Although many neighbors of the couple said they never saw Koppel drunk around his family, a bar owner in the couple’s own neighborhood said Koppel was “out of his mind” due to alcohol.
