Andy Griffith, a TV icon for many who grew up in the 1960s, died this morning at his home in Dare County, N.C. He was 86. Griffith, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005, starred as “America’s favorite sheriff,” Andy Taylor, in The Andy Griffith Show, and later as attorney Ben Matlock in Matlock. He was also a regular guest on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 1950s. Griffith was born in Mount Airy, N.C. in 1926.
