Merkel, 59, has been ordered by a doctor to spend time lying down. She will still be working, but she was forced to cancel an upcoming trip to Warsaw—and she will not attend Davos. Merkel fractured her pelvis while on vacation in Switzerland and then flew back to Berlin on December 30, where she delivered the New Year’s address. She thought the injury was just a bruise, but a doctor told her on January 3 that it was “a bit more than that,” a government spokesman said.
