A crowded bus veered off a mountain road in Nepal on Monday, killing 33 passengers and injuring an additional 28. The bus was reportedly filled with people traveling to collect government payments for victims of last year’s earthquake. The bus was en route to Kartike Deurali, the village hit the hardest by the disaster that left 9,000 dead. The accident was thought to have been caused by bad weather: The conditions were slippery due to torrents of rain. Though authorities put the death toll at 33, victims and families say many more people were killed and their bodies simply not found yet. “The bus stalled while climbing the hill and the driver tried to restart it, but the vehicle rolled backward and then slipped off the road,” one passenger was quoted as saying, noting that there were 85 people on board.
