Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie, Jr. identified the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling as Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake. Dabadie announced their names at a press conference on Wednesday. He said the officers—who reportedly gunned down Sterling as he was pinned to the ground in front of a convenience store—were four- and three-year veterans of the department, respectively. They have both been placed on administrative leave, Dabadie said. “Early yesterday morning, we experienced a horrible tragedy,” he added. “Like you, I am demanding answers.” Dabadie said his department has turned the entire case over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI.
Mayor Kip Holden said President Obama’s office called and offered to help the city in the aftermath of the shooting. He also said officials have been operating with the intent to conduct a full and transparent investigation since the event first occurred. “It’s not like we need to be hand-held and spoonfed when it comes to doing what’s right,” Holden said. “We are doing our best to make sure we get all the answers.”
