A filly partly owned by former NFL coach Bill Parcells was euthanized on Saturday after suffering what was described as a catastrophic injury in a leg-buckling stumble near the finish line. Maple Leaf Mel was leading the pack at the track in Saratoga, New York, when the 3-year-old went down—unseating the jockey, who ended up getting stitches. “It’s just cruel what happened,” said Brendan Walsh, trainer of Pretty Mischievous, who was declared the winner.
