Ariana Grande gave a cheeky shoutout to Botox while accepting the Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Friday. Grande’s prize was presented to her by actress Jennifer Coolidge. “I can’t tell you what it means to me. Your comedic genius and your brilliance has inspired me my entire life. I just love you,” Grande told Coolidge in a clip shared on X by The Hollywood Reporter. Grande, already a bonafide pop megastar, wowed audiences as Galinda alongside Cynthia Erivo in the Broadway musical turned-film Wicked. After thanking Coolidge, Grande poked fun at the award’s title. “I’ve been performing since I was a child, so I never thought at the age of 31 I would be hearing the words ‘rising star’ again,” Grande joked. “So I want to start by thanking my good friends Botox and Juvéderm. I thought I’d be hearing, you know, ‘slightly withering star’ or ‘drooping star’ by now,” she added. This isn’t the first time the star has gotten candid about injectables. Back in 2023, Grande revealed in a Vogue YouTube video that she had stopped doing lip filler and Botox because it was “too much.”

The father of Kirby Smart, head coach for University of Georgia’s football team, died on Saturday after a surgery went wrong, according to the school. Sonny Smart, 76, had suffered a fall in New Orleans shortly before the team played in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday. He fractured his hip and was taken to the hospital for surgery, but died shortly after midnight on Saturday due to complications from the procedure. A statement released by the school said he was surrounded by his wife and children, including Kirby, according to ESPN. “He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries,” it said. Sonny himself was a high school football coach in Alabama and Georgia, ESPN reported. He was in New Orleans to see his son coach. Kirby led his team in the playoff game, which saw Georgia lose 23-10 to Notre Dame, before returning to his father’s bedside at the hospital, per ESPN. The game had been delayed a day due to the New Year’s Day terror attack in New Orleans that killed 14 and injured dozens more.

Former child star Jake Lloyd, 35, said he is doing “pretty good” after completing an 18-month stay in an inpatient facility for mental health wellness, wrote author Clayton Sandell in a Substack Wednesday. Sandell interviewed Lloyd and his mother in an update for fans after he previously wrote about Lloyd’s mental health struggles in a news story. “I can now accept taking on continued treatment, and therapy, and my meds. Everyone’s been very supportive,” Lloyd told Sandell. Lloyd was 8 years old when he landed the role of a young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. With a push from the George Lucas-directed film, Lloyd seemed destined for superstardom, appearing in episodes of the TV series ER and the 1996 Arnold Schwarzenegger-led film Jingle All the Way. However, a series of legal and mental health struggles derailed his career. Sandell’s mother revealed this year that he suffers from “anosognosia,” a common condition for those with schizophrenia. In May 2023, Lloyd said he had a complete “psychotic break,” was arrested, and hit “rock bottom.” However, he told Sandell that it was necessary to “honestly take part in treatment, honestly take your meds, and honestly live with your diagnosis.”

Actor Nicole Kidman took a moment to honor her late mother, Janelle Kidman, as she accepted the International Star Award on Friday night at 36th Annual Palm Springs International Film Awards. Kidman was at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 7 when she reportedly received word that her mother had passed away at the age of 84. Kidman won the Best Actress award at the festival, but Halina Reijn, director of Kidman’s latest film, Babygirl, accepted the award on her behalf after she immediately left the event. Kidman circled back on that moment in her speech at the Palm Springs International Film Awards, thanking Reijn and thanking her mother. “I’m still grieving… my mom,” Kidman said, tearing up, in a video clip capturing the moment. “Thank you for giving me the chance to say this is for my mom. My whole career has been for my mom and my dad, and they are not here now. But I still want to keep working and giving to the world because I love what I do, and I love you all,” Kidman said as the room erupted in applause. Kidman’s role in the film has been nominated for the 2025 Golden Globe award for best actress.

Nicki Minaj’s lawyer has dismissed a “frivolous” lawsuit brought by a man claiming to be the rapper’s former manager, according to a report. In court documents, Brandon Garrett alleges that Minaj slapped him so hard that it knocked his hat off while he was serving as her manager on tour earlier this year, TMZ reported. He claims that she flew into a rage after learning that he had once sent someone else to pick up one of her prescriptions. “You have lost your f---ing mind and if my husband were here, he would knock out your f---ing teeth,” Garrett claims Minaj said. “You’re a dead man walking. You just f---ed up your whole life and you will never be anyone, I’ll make sure of it.” Minaj then allegedly slapped Garrett’s face, knocking off his hat, he alleges, before striking him again on his wrist. Minaj’s lawyer Judd Burstein told TMZ that she has not been served with any papers yet. “However, if the lawsuit is as reported by TMZ, it is completely false and frivolous,” he said. “We are confident that the matter brought by this ex assistant will be resolved swiftly in Mrs. Petty’s favor.”

Convicted rapist Danny Masterson’s ex-wife, Bijou Phillips, is stepping out again with a new boyfriend. Phillips was spotted with businessman Jamie Mazur on Thursday, over a year since she filed for divorce from the That ’70s Show actor. A source told People that Phillips and Mazur met “through friends” after Phillips “had a hard time” following Masterson’s incarceration. Phillips divorced Masterson in September 2023, the same month he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women. “He was initially just a confidant and someone safe that she could talk to,” a source told People of Mazur. “They’ve been dating for a couple of months now. He’s added a spark to her life. She seems much happier and more relaxed lately.” When Masterson was found guilty in May 2023, a source told the same outlet that Phillips, who stood by him during the trial, “never expected him to be found guilty” but had “no plans to leave him.”

Good news Project Runway fans—Heidi Klum is making her return to the hit television series after an eight-year hiatus. Klum, who hosted the show for 16 seasons (2004-2017), is returning after her last episode aired in 2017, according to a People exclusive. The model was a well-known host on the show since its inception, winning an Emmy Award for her work in 2013 and being nominated nine times. The outlet reported that the show will be streamed on Freeform, Disney+ and Hulu. In 2017, Klum referred to the series as her and co-host Tim Gunn’s “baby” that they helped create and host since its inception. The two stepped away and hosted their own show, Making the Cut, airing on Amazon Prime Video. Now fans will be able to see her famous goodbye to those cut (“auf wiedersehen”) once more. Season 21 of the show is debuting this year, with 10 episodes, according to People. The judges and premiere date have not been announced.

Pop diva Sabrina Carpenter lost out on Spotify’s top streaming spot for 2024 at the last minute by a razor thin margin. Her hit “Espresso” had been promoted in the platform’s Wrapped campaign at the beginning of December as the most-played tune of the year, but by the end of the month it had been overtaken by Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather”, previously trailing at No.3. It was a close race, with Eilish’s track coming in at 1,775,172,881 to Carpenter’s 1,774,525,704, for a difference of just 650,000 streams. Any competition between the two stars also seems only set to intensify going into 2025, with Eilish nominated for seven Grammys compared to Carpenter’s six, with both of them up for the awards’ coveted record, album and pop solo performances of the year prizes.

Senator, 91, Claims Position as Third in Line for Presidency
GERONTOCRACY
Published 01.03.25 1:54PM EST
Chuck Grassley (R-IA) leaves the Senate floor as the Senate is working through the weekend on a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill with assistance for Ukraine and Israel at the US Capitol on February 11, 2024 in Washington, DC. The bill includes $60 billion to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia, $14.1 billion in security assistance for Israel, $9.2 billion in humanitarian assistance and $4.8 billion to support regional partners in the Indo-Pacific region, among other provisions, according to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, 91, was sworn in as Senate president pro tempore on Friday, making him third in line to the presidency. The position goes to the longest-serving senator of the majority party. The Iowa Republican previously served as president pro tempore from 2019 to 2021, before Democrats took control of the Senate. Even after months of concerns about the age and mental fitness of President Joe Biden, neither the presidency nor Congress is getting any younger. Donald Trump will be the oldest president ever to take office at 78, and this Congress is the third oldest since its creation, according to NBC News. The average age in the Senate is 63.8 years, while the House’s average age is 57.7 years. Twenty members of Congress are 80 years or older. Though Chuck Grassley is currently the oldest sitting senator, he isn’t the oldest senator or president pro tempore ever. That was the South Carolina Republican Strom Thurmond, who served as president pro tempore at the age of 98 in 2001.

Zendaya is still grieving about her Dancing with the Stars stint coming to an end. The Challengers star sat down with W Magazine and revealed her gripes with her work on the show, and said she doesn’t watch series now. “Listen, I’m still harboring a little animosity about that,” she said of her losing the celebrity dancing show. “I felt that loss.” The actor came in second place on the sixteenth season of the show. She also called the environment “highly stressful” being only 16-years-old at the time and having to perform on live television every week. “It’s so scary. I took it very seriously, which, in retrospect, I wish I didn’t,” the former Disney star said. “I wish I’d enjoyed it a little bit more and just was like, ‘Eh, whatever.’ You know what I mean? But I was stressing myself out. I really went through it on that.”
