Thomas M. Menino, the longest serving mayor of Boston, has passed away at age 71. Menino was diagnosed with advanced cancer in February, just after he left office after five terms as mayor. Last week, Menino stopped chemotherapy and other treatment for his inoperable cancer. Cardinal Sean O’Malley visited him in the hospital yesterday. Menino had started on a book tour last week for the memoir he published earlier this month. This year, at the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, Menino told survivors, “When lights dim and cameras go away, know that our support and love for you will never waver.”
