An 11-year-old and both of his parents died Tuesday after falling into a volcanic crater in Italy, police said. The boy, from Turin, reportedly wandered into an off-limits area of a popular tourist attraction near Naples—the Solfatara Crater in Pozzuoli. The dormant volcano emits sulfurous fumes and is surrounded by a type of quicksand. Police aren’t sure if the boy was pulled in by quicksand or lost consciousness because of the fumes, but his parents were killed trying to save him. A 7-year-old boy with the family survived.
