When budding photographer Brandon Stanton arrived in New York City through the Lincoln Tunnel, he thought, “The buildings were impressive, but what struck me the most were the people. There were tons of them. And they all seemed to be in a hurry.” What began as a week-long trip turned into three years documenting the residents of the great metropolis, capturing the variety of individuals who populate the city’s teeming streets and showing readers a slice of each of their lives. In a new book, Humans of New York, an extension of his popular blog, Stanton curates a range of these portraits. One of his subjects, an elderly woman with a glorious puff of white hair and a huge smile, seems to sum up his project: “Every time I force myself to go outside, something wonderful happens!”

"It seems that a lot of people my age try to be interesting by having problems or starting conflicts. I'd rather be interesting because I created something beautiful."
