A woman in the audience at Friday night’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics was sent to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after a broken bat flew into the stands and struck her in the head. Oakland player Brett Lawrie broke his bat on a groundout to second base, accidentally sending part of the bat into the stands. A fan who sat in the row behind the woman when the bat flew into the audience described the incident as “violent.” “She bled a lot. A lot. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that,” he said. A hospital spokeswoman said she was still gathering information about the woman’s condition and identity.
