Florida Governor Ron DeSantis removed Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel from office Friday, suspending him after 10 months of turmoil in the wake of the Parkland shooting that left 17 people dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “Effective immediately, I am officially suspending Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel for his repeated failures, incompetence and neglect of duty,” Gov. DeSantis tweeted. The suspension comes after nearly a year of negative revelations that exposed a chaotic and disorganized response to the massacre on February 14, 2018 under Israel’s leadership. Some deputies told officials investigating the day’s events that they couldn’t remember when they’d last been trained to handle an active shooter despite previous active-shooter situations in the county.

DeSantis has temporarily replaced Israel with Gregory Tony, a former police sergeant who has a background in active-shooter training. Tony will be the first black sheriff in Broward County’s history.
