BTK Serial killer Dennis Rader will help write a book about his murders and make sure that a portion of the profits go to the victims' families. “I can never replace their love ones, my deeds too ‘dark’ to understand, the book or movies, etc. is the only way to help them,” he said in a handwritten four-page letter from jail. Rader killed ten people in the Wichita area from 1974 to 1991. He referred to himself as BTK for “blind, torture, kill.” He was sent to the El Dorado state prison in Kansas in 2005. Rader is corresponding with Katherine Ramsland, a forensic psychology professor and author of 54 mostly academic nonfiction books, regarding the project. He said in his letter that "work on a book is close to a deal." Rader has rarely done media interviews in accord with a court agreement with the victims' families (he can't earn money from the book). However, he “hope[s] someday to open up,” he wrote in the letter. “People like me, need to be understood, so the criminal professional field, can better understand, the criminal mind. That would be my way helping debt to society.”
