Gay and lesbian couples took to the streets on Harvey Milk Day to target districts that voted in favor of Proposition 8 in 2008—the ban on same-sex marriage in California. Going door-to-door, the gay and lesbian couples hoped to humanize their cause by telling their story and speaking about their struggles and battle for equal rights. Harvey Milk Day was officially signed into law last year by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and commemorates Milk, who was assassinated after serving 11 months on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors in 1978 as an outspoken advocate for the city’s homosexual community.
