Canada this morning became the second country after Uruguay to legalize recreational marijuana as its new laws took effect Wednesday. And it announced a bonus for pot users: Its government will pardon Canadians who have previous “simple possession charges,” CTV News reports. Ottawa will vacate “cases of possession of 30 grams or less,” because that amount will be legal under the new recreational laws that came into effect at midnight. Those seeking a pardon will have to apply for one, according to the Associated Press, which cited a Canadian official. According to one member of parliament, there are reportedly “hundreds of thousands of Canadians that carry personal possession charges for marijuana.”
