Female guests in flats were reportedly turned away from the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday night for the premiere of the movie Carol. “Rules have not changed throughout the years (tuxedo, formal dress for gala screenings),” said festival spokeswoman Christine Aimé. “There is no specific mention about the height of the women’s heels.” She didn’t clarify whether women had actually been asked to leave. Most of the women turned away were in their fifties, in rhinestone flats, according to the BBC. Josh Brolin and other actors have reportedly vowed to wear heels on the carpet themselves—in protest of the reported policies for women.
