The children’s book series Captain Underpants topped the list of the most challenged books of 2012. The American Library Association logs formal complaints directed to libraries and schools requesting that a title be removed because of inappropriate content and compiles this annual list. Captain Underpants complaints of “offensive language” and “unsuitable for age group” were apparently enough for it to top the gay-penguin tale And Tango Makes Three (No. 5) and, yes, the BDSM-laden 50 Shades of Grey (No. 4).
