All the warnings about "Carmageddon" have paid off so far: traffic flowed freely all day on Saturday, the first day of the 405 freeway’s partial closure—and few drivers abandoned their cars in the middle of the road. Ten miles of the 405 were blocked off for construction, and JetBlue offered $4 flights between Burbank and Long Beach airports. A local cycling club decided to give JetBlue a run for its money, saying its six best riders could beat the 150-seat Airbus A320's travel time. As cars stayed off the roads, cyclists rode along the Los Angeles River, beating the Airbus and finishing the race in one and a half hours. The stretch will still be closed Sunday and is set to reopen at 6 a.m. Monday.
