Must. Scratch. That. Itch. Best-selling animal photographer Carli Davidson has now managed to capture cats in the adorable split-second when they’re overcome with the urge to shake off an insatiable ear twinge. The models for her new book, Shake Cats, are all rescues, each of which was adopted in the Portland, Oregon, area. (You may also know Davidson from the dog best-sellers Shake and Shake Puppies.) In honor of National Cat Day, satisfy your Internet urge to look at our feline friends as they find ear-scratch nirvana.

Davidson photographed her first shaking cat in 2011, while helping out at a local shelter. “Most cats were adopted almost immediately after our shoots and to think that I might have had even the slightest part in that feels amazing,” she says.

For Shake Cat, Davidson photographed close to 100 cats. Her background in animal training must have proved helpful for the process. "Getting the cats to shake was actually more of a grooming process than a waiting game,” she said. “The ear cleanings are what generally caused the shake to happen, I just had to be ready.”
