The fire that sparked on the Jersey Shore boardwalk last Thursday, wrecking tons of businesses and tearing through nearby communities, was caused by electrical equipment and wiring that had been previously damaged by superstorm Sandy, officials said Tuesday. “During the storm, this wiring and these connections became fully submerged in saltwater,” Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said. “Over time, degradation of this wiring and these connections occurred.” Coronato can’t be sure why the wires failed at that point, stating that “we will never know.”
