Things were civil on Monday during opening remarks at the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court-nominee Sonia Sotomayor. Might the gloves come off Tuesday when senators question her directly? Expect Republicans to target Sotomayor over her “wise Latina” comment. Sotomayor tried to preempt their criticisms in her opening remarks, saying she serves the “impartiality of our judicial system.” Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina hinted that the GOP’s attack might not be so strong, saying she would have to “melt down” in order to fail, and then comforting her, “I don't think you will.”
