It’s kind of like when Mom and Dad tell you they’re getting divorced for your own good: Guatemala’s first lady, Sandra Torres de Colom, has begun divorce proceedings against her husband, President Alvaro Colom, so that she can run for president. Guatemalan law prohibits anyone in the president’s extended family from running for president—and Torres announced on March 8 she will be the next presidential candidate from the governing National Unity party in the September election. If both parties agree, the divorce could be finalized in about a month.
