The 11th doctor is out. Matt Smith is leaving the British show Doctor Who, the BBC announced on Saturday. Smith, the 11th actor to play the role in the long-running series, will regenerate in the 2013 Christmas special. He will still appear in the 50th anniversary special in November, which was already filmed. Smith, 30, called the role “the most brilliant experience,” and said he was “incredibly proud” of what Doctor Who accomplished under showrunner Steven Moffat. When he took over in 2010, he was the youngest person to inhabit the role. Moffat offered no hints at who the next Doctor would be, simply saying that “a life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again. After 50 years, that’s still exciting.”
