New York Times Says It’s Been Hacked

Error

Work of Syrian hackers.

The Syrian Electronic Army strikes again. The New York Times website is down, and a spokesperson for the paper says the company believes it’s the result of a “malicious external attack.” A computer security expert noticed that the Times’ website briefly pointed to a domain for the Syrian Electronic Army, the pro–Bashar al-Assad group that has hacked a string of media companies in recent months. SEA has hacked the BBC, NPR, The Washington Post, and, most successfully, the Associated Press’s Twitter feed, which it used to claim that President Obama had been injured, causing the stock market to plummet. On August 14, the Times went offline due to an internal error.
