A hospital in the French city of Clermont-Ferrand is planning to open a wine bar for its terminally ill patients, where they can sip a few “medically-supervised” glasses with their families. “Why should we refuse the charms of the soil to those at the end of their lives? Nothing justifies such an prohibition,” Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital Center said in a statement, adding that “medically supervised tastings will help brighten what is often a difficult daily life.” The bar will be the first of its kind in France and hospital staff will be specially trained before it opens in September.
