Farmers digging a fish pond in southwestern China discovered a 50-foot skeleton that paleontologists recently deemed a new species of dinosaur. Named Qijianglong, it’s a member of the sauropod family, known for their extremely long necks, which can comprise up to half their body length. “Qijianglong shows that long-necked dinosaurs diversified in unique ways in Asia during Jurassic times -- something very special was going on in that continent," said University of Alberta PHD student Testuto Miyashita in a press release. The skeleton is currently housed in Qijiang, but will be moved to a new dinosaur museum upon its completion.
