FDA Commissioner to Step Down

END OF AN ERA

After almost six years.

Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Margaret Hamburg is reportedly stepping down, Reuters said Thursday, citing a source briefed on the matter. The White House is expected to announce Hamburg’s resignation Friday, but FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Yao declined to comment. The 59-year-old has been at the helm of the FDA for almost six years, one of the longest-serving commissioners in the modern era. Hamburg has spearheaded public-health initiatives including restricting tobacco use and drug approvals and previously served at the National Institutes of Health before becoming New York City’s health commissioner.
