New al Qaeda training camps are sprouting up in Afghanistan, causing the Pentagon and CIA to evaluate whether the terror group could re-emerge as a breeding ground for attacks on the United States, The New York Times reported Tuesday. Most of the camps are still not as large as those Osama bin Laden built before the 9/11 terror attacks, but the scope of al Qaeda’s deadly resilience in Afghanistan has apparently caught officials by surprise, the Times reported. Until a few months ago, authorities had reportedly been focused on targeting the last remaining senior al Qaeda leaders in hiding.
