The alumni leaders of Cathedral High School in El Paso, Texas, will reportedly rescind an invitation for famed football coach Lou Holtz to speak at an upcoming fundraising gala because of his recent comments about immigrants. The former Notre Dame coach’s speaking gig recently came under fire from the El Paso Times editorial board, which noted that acceptance of immigrants is central to Cathedral’s mission, as the school welcomes students from nearby Juarez, Mexico. The newspaper recalled how Holtz “lobbed hate-filled rhetoric at immigrants” during a pro-Donald Trump political event last month in Cleveland. “I don’t want to become you,” the ex-coach said of immigrants living in the United States. “I don’t want to speak your language, I don’t want to celebrate your holidays, I sure as hell don’t want to cheer for your soccer team!” According to Times reporter Bob Moore, the school—a Catholic Lasallian college preparatory school—decided Wednesday to cancel Holtz as a speaker.
