Chelsea Manning has filed to run for U.S. Senate in Maryland, federal election filings show. Manning, the transgender former Army private convicted of leaking classified information to Wikileaks, would be challenging Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin. She reportedly filed with the Federal Elections Commission on Thursday and plans to run as a Democrat. Manning’s possible political ambitions have been a matter of debate since her release from a military prison last year. She said in an interview with Vogue last August that she was “certainly not going to say no” to a political run, but offered no specifics at that time.
