Traffic in Beijing is notoriously terrible. Most commuters get around it by taking the subway, but bus commuters can only move as fast as the traffic—which is to say, hardly at all.

Now that could all change. Chinese engineers have invented a bus that performs the opposite feat of a subway tunnel—instead of running below the crammed vehicles, it can roll right over them.

The bus, produced by the Beijing company Transit Explore Bus, has its wheels at the bottom of two tall stilts shaped like walls, so the bottom half of it is literally a tunnel that other cars can pass through.

"The biggest advantage is that the bus will save lots of road space," Song Youzhou, the lead engineer of the project, told China.org.

Transit Explore Bus says they’ll be doing their first test drives in the city of Qinhuangdao this summer.
