Condoleezza Rice: I’m Not Ready to Coach Cleveland Browns

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday said she is “not ready” to coach the Cleveland Browns after an ESPN report suggested the team was eyeing her for head coach. “I’m not ready to coach but I would like to call a play or two next season if the Browns need ideas! And at no time will I call for a ‘prevent defense,’” Rice wrote on Facebook. “On a more serious note, I do hope that the NFL will start to bring women into the coaching profession as position coaches and eventually coordinators and head coaches,” she said. ESPN had earlier cited a source who said Browns general manager John Dorsey wanted to interview Rice for a head coaching job. The team had reportedly said it wanted to sit down with Rice to find out what she can bring to the position. Dorsey issued his own statement Sunday disputing the ESPN report. “Our coaching search will be thorough and deliberate, but we are still in the process of composing the list of candidates and Secretary Rice has not been discussed,” Dorsey said, praising Rice as a “great leader” who “possesses the highest possible character.” Rice has gotten active in college sports since leaving the Bush White House in 2009, having worked on the College Football Playoff selection committee from 2013 to 2016, where she was an inaugural member. She has also been spotted rubbing elbows with Browns’ owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam at a recent game.
