The world’s leading scientists have warned governments that there are only 10 years left to avoid a global catastrophe. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) unveiled its latest report in South Korea early Monday morning and warned that “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society” are needed to keep global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees. “Scientists might want to write in capital letters, ‘ACT NOW IDIOTS,’ but they need to say that with facts and numbers, and they have,” said Kaisa Kosonen, from Greenpeace, who was an observer at the negotiations that led to the landmark report. The report says avoiding a catastrophe will involve “annual average investment needs in the energy system of around $2.4 trillion” between 2016 and 2035.
