The tipster who led the federal authorities to a sweeping, nationwide college cheating scandal was a Los Angeles man named Morrie Tobin, the Wall Street Journal reports. Tobin was reportedly being questioned for his alleged involvement in a “pump-and-dump investment scheme,” a scam in which stock prices are inflated so they can be sold at a profit. In order to “obtain leniency,” Tobin reportedly told the feds about the head women’s soccer coach at Yale University—whom he said wanted a bribe in exchange for getting his daughter into the Ivy League school. Tobin was reportedly not charged in the college-admissions scandal, but is currently awaiting his sentencing in the securities fraud case. According to the Journal, he signed a plea agreement in November.
