Conan O’Brien Roasts Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Old Man’ Oscars Hosting Advice

DID HIS BEST

One tip was particularly unhelpful, this year’s Oscars host said.

Conan O’Brien stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to share just how unhelpful Kimmel’s “old man” hosting advice was ahead of the Oscars on Sunday.

O’Brien is gearing up to host the 97th Academy Awards for the first time, so naturally he got some advice from Kimmel, who’s hosted the show four times. “You were a complete waste of time,” O’Brien told Kimmel, who conceded that his “old man tips” may not have been the best. “Jimmy is obsessed with sitting down.”

“His tips kept going back to ‘Try and sit down,’” O’Brien continued, roasting him. “‘If you can do the jokes sitting down—do them sitting down.’ What are you, Franklin Roosevelt?” he joked, before also blasting Kimmel for being more concerned with the food at the dinner they were having than giving him good advice.

“This guy was obsessed with ordering appetizers, and we chose a nice restaurant—you chose a nice restaurant,” O’Brien said, “I pay. And he didn’t even make a move for his credit card.”

Kimmel offered that everything else related to hosting, namely telling jokes on Oscars night, would be a breeze for the comedian anyway. “I would not give you tips on jokes or any of that stuff, I would never do anything like that,” Kimmel said. But he at least tried to check in about O’Brien’s wardrobe for the big night, which ultimately, only got him roasted once more. “You’ve got a tuxedo?” Kimmel asked reassuringly.

“I have a tuxedo,” O’Brien replied, “I’m gonna change outfits 15 times,” he joked, before asking, “How many tuxedos would you wear in a night?”

“What I would have is two jackets and then I would switch into the second jacket, and I always felt dumb about it,” Kimmel replied, sincerely.

O’Brien took that in: “Good to know… and you would tie a chair to your a--, right?”
