"Heritage not Hate" is a common sentiment among supporters of the Confederate flag, which was flown by the Southern secessionist states during the 1861-1865 American Civil War. The war was started by the South when it attempted to leave the Union so it could continue practicing a system of slavery based on the idea that blacks are inferior to whites.
