Conservative nonprofit Turning Point USA, which promotes itself as a grassroots response to a perceived “liberal intolerance” on college campuses, has come under fire for racism and alleged illegal campaign activity following a New Yorker exposé. The group, which has touted its close ties to the Trump family, hosted Donald Trump Jr. at its three-day annual summit in West Palm Beach, Florida this week. According to the New Yorker report, the group regularly funnels money into student government elections to support right-leaning candidates on campuses all over the country. The piece points to an atmosphere within the organization that was hostile to minorities, with examples including a text message from Crystal Clanton—formerly the group’s national field director—to another Turning Point employee that allegedly said: “I hate all black people. Like fuck them all... I hate blacks. End of story.” Additionally, the exposé suggested TPUSA violated campaign-finance laws by supporting political campaigns despite being barred from doing so.
