In a scheme stretching back to the 1980s, 80 retired police officers and firefighters have been charged for a disability scam that cost taxpayers as much as $400 million. Suspects claimed psychiatric ailments such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression prevented them from working. The suspects collected Social Security disability insurance of $30,000 to $50,000 a year. Some of them even lied about 9/11 to collect checks.
