Two people died in a Wednesday afternoon shooting at a Kroger grocery store near Louisville, Kentucky, according to Jeffersontown Police Chief Sam Rogers. The Courier Journal reports a call alerted authorities to the shooting just before 3:00 p.m. A man reportedly entered the store, shot a man, then fled to the parking lot, where he shot a woman. Rogers said the woman “appeared to be a bystander.” The shooter also reportedly “exchanged gunfire with an armed citizen,” but neither was shot or wounded. Rogers said the shooter was apprehended by authorities in “close proximity” to the grocery store. “We are shocked and saddened by the shooting incident that occurred around 2:30 p.m. today,” Kroger said in a statement. “Thanks to the quick response of the local police department, the suspect was apprehended and our store is now secure.”
