A spokesman and top consultant for Corey Stewart, a Republican nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Virginia, once likened the GOP establishment to a “house negro” and said civil-rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) was a “#PompousAss,” CNN reported. In a 2014 tweet, Rick Shaftan said there were “a lot of parallels between the ‘House Negro’ and the GOP Establishment.” More recently, he questioned the accomplishments of Lewis. “So what has John Lewis done besides get beat up 50+ years ago? #PompousAss,” Shaftan wrote in 2017. He also dismissed the importance of civil-rights icon Rosa Parks, tweeting, “Give me a effing break. How about PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY?” Schlafly is a conservative political activist known for her anti-feminist views. He also called Michael Brown, an unarmed black man shot by police, a “thug” and called the protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, “animals” in other posts, CNN reports. The Daily Beast previously reported that Shaftan described majority-black cities as “shitholes” and discouraged people from opening up businesses in them.
