CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp said Friday that there’s “nothing wrong with nationalism,” suggesting the annual conservative confab is now fully embracing right-wing nationalism. When asked by Fox News co-host Sandra Smith about the conference’s theme, “America First,” Schlapp explained that while some people believe that CPAC is only about “President Trump and MAGA,” the conference aims to “tak[e] a step back and [ask] what actually makes America great.”
“What we believe,” Schlapp added, “is that going back to foundational principles of the Constitution, which includes securing borders, it includes embracing the idea that America is a nation and there’s nothing wrong with nationalism, and it embraces the idea of that giving the individual American people freedoms to live the lives they want to live.”
