‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Wins Big at Tony Awards

The original musical Dear Evan Hansen dominated the Tony Awards on Sunday night, taking home six prizes, including Best New Musical. The musical, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, centers on a lonely high-school student who gets pulled into a family’s grief after their son commits suicide. The musical’s breakout star, 23-year-old Ben Platt, won a Best Leading Actor award for his performance as Evan. Nominated for six awards, the play won six of them, with prizes for Best Featured Actress, Best Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Book. Hello, Dolly! claimed the prize for Best Musical Revival, with star Bette Midler winning the prize for Best Leading Actress in a musical. Oslo, a drama about the 1993 Middle East peace talks, won the prize for the Best New Play.
