President-elect Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis played a round of golf on Tuesday as the Florida governor prepares to name his replacement for soon-to-be top diplomat Sen. Marco Rubio. Rubio’s confirmation hearing to head up the State Department is scheduled for Wednesday. With Rubio expected to be one of the first Cabinet members to be sworn in, the Florida senator’s seat becomes open for DeSantis to fill until an election in 2026. Politico earlier reported that the governor was leaning toward state Attorney General Ashley Moody. DeSantis said he has not made a final decision but emphasized that the pick must be on board with Trump’s agenda and have a track record in addressing illegal immigration. Like Rubio, DeSantis previously had a rocky relationship with Trump, but the two have made amends since the presidential primary. Trump briefly mulled replacing Pete Hegseth with DeSantis as defense secretary, sending MAGAland into meltdown.
