Designer of Waterslide That Killed Boy, 10, Surrenders to Police

The designer of a Kansas amusement-park waterslide that decapitated a 10-year-old boy returned to the U.S. and surrendered to police after being indicted on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated endangering of a child. John Schooley, 72, was taken into custody at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after returning from China on Monday night. The U.S. Marshals Service said Schooley was being held in Dallas pending his removal to Kansas. Caleb Schwab suffered the fatal injuries on the slide on Aug. 7, 2016, at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas, when his raft flew into one of the ride’s metal hoops, decapitating him and injuring two other other passengers. The Verrückt waterslide, once listed as the tallest in the world, was only in operation for six months before the fatal accident.
