The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 1,500 points on Monday afternoon, wiping out stock-market gains for 2018 thus far. It recovered slightly by the end of the day, closing at 1,100 points down. The plunge saw the Dow fall below 24,000 in one of its biggest drops to date. The 5.6-percent slide began Friday, and accelerated Monday afternoon.
