It was one giant leap for psychiatry on Saturday when a new edition of the discipline's "bible" (a term resented by psychiatrists) was released this week. The DSM-5 —the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—includes many changes that caused it to be controversial even before its release. Among the edition’s major changes are alterations of diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
