Basketball star Dwyane Wade has opened up about how his doctors discovered a cancerous tumor on his kidney. The retired NBA guard had 40% of his right kidney removed in December 2023 because of a cancerous tumor, he revealed Thursday on his podcast The Why with Dwyane Wade. Wade said that he discovered the tumor after putting off making a doctor’s appointment for years. Because his father had been previously been diagnosed with prostate cancer, Wade shared with the doctor that he was urinating slowly, had stomach issues and cramps. A full body scan revealed a “cyst/tumor,” and Wade underwent surgery to remove almost half of his left kidney. After the procedure, he learned that the tumor had been cancerous. Wade said his health journey made him more open to vulnerability. “As a man, you never want your family to see you weak,” he said. “Don’t want to be perceived weak, don’t want to be seen in your weakest moments but I had to.” He continued. “I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me and in that process, in my weakness I found strength in my family.”
