The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts honored comedian Eddie Murphy with the Mark Twain Prize on Sunday. Saturday Night Live alum Tracy Morgan presented the nation’s top prize for humor to the comedian, calling Murphy his “comedic hero.” Morgan, who survived a tragic car crash last year that left him in a coma, said Murphy was the first person to call him and make him laugh after the accident. Murphy called the prize a “tremendous honor,” but wanted the center to clarify the recognition. “Actually, it’s an award, but they call it a prize,” he said. “Usually when there’s a prize, there’s money.” Past honorees include Steve Martin, Carol Burnett, and George Carlin. The tribute will air on PBS on Nov. 23.
